As per title. Vulcanoes, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. As a simulationist I would like for them to be able to be of any intensity with a Gaussian probability distribution, but I guess this would be too much.

Haha, I was being a little sarcastic when I said that, but I do think natural disasters could be a cool thing. We already have earthquakes, but they suck. Immediate need for revamp on those babies! But let’s skip that for more interesting stuff.

Imagine a tsunami that just obliterates 75% of the map, including all the players in its wake. You get like a 30 minute notice that it’s coming and watch people scramble to collect their belongings and all congregate on the other side of the map.

Then, the water subsides and an army of fish men are left behind, prompting the player base to band together to defeat a common enemy! Maybe we could get some special loot.

Maybe that’s too chaotic for you, fine. How about a tornado that just rips through 2×2 cells in an unpredictable pattern, dealing damage per second to everything inside. Easy enough to outrun, might hurt your base a bit, or even take down some walls if they aren’t reinforced.

Still too much? OK, how about a casual blizzard. Spread snow an extra 50 tiles south of the current snow area and make it deep, slowing movement speed by 100 or 200. Increased polar bear spawn!

Thunderstorms, strike random tiles for 100 damage inside its area while the storm persists. Lightning rods can protect a base from damage.

There’s a lot of possibilities with this stuff, that’s just what I came up with on the spot. Think of it as a way to hasten the removal of ruins or old players, while adding a little spice to the game. More PvE stuff, you know.

Does PvE mean Players versus Enviroment? The environment is too innocuous for my taste at the moment. The fact that at least 5 charachters are able to reach the deepest level tells enough. The same for most players having nothing to fear by the environment when they are on surface and present by keyboard.

    PvE is Player vs environment

My only concern with this is the lag. I don’t want to think about the issues with server stability…

No, we need a global invasion of aggressive Penguins.

Have Hornets act like Locust and eat all our crops, trees, and wooden walls.

The earthquake, hurricane and tornado in the example would really, really suck for anyone who isn’t on the game 24/7. A solo player or small tribe housing could get damaged enough for a player to die while they could do literally nothing about it because they had to go to work or sleep. The game is harsh enough as it is on these players without introducing something like that imo.

If we wanted natural disasters, we’d need disasters that occur over the course of days. Perhaps at worst a slowly flooding lake or riverbank with temporary water-based monsters coming to the surface to attack. Could take it a fantastical direction as well, as in UW monsters beginning to spawn on the surface as a rift or tunnel opens. Players would have to fight their way to it and seal it off etc.

I’m not against increasing the difficulty of the surface via random events, but they definitely, DEFINITELY should not be “30 minute warning” or sudden events, as those disproportionately harm players that don’t have someone watching out for them 24/7. If we keep building the game and community to exclude these players, there will be nobody left.

I concur with Native. It would be interesting to have an earthquake that causes UW mobs to pop on the surface, or new sea monsters because of a seastorm or flood… but yes. The time investment in the game is already rather great to have something else increasing it!
